Now in its tenth year, the Traffic Zone is an inspiring place to work. It offers the following benefits to its members:

  • Affordable, secure beautiful studios in an exciting neighborhood

  • The stability gained from being a member of a co-op that owns the building in equal partnership with Artspace

  • Participation in the Lobby Gallery throughout the year

  • Studio talks and critiques

  • Participation in the annual Open Studio, attended by over 1,000 art patrons

  • Storage facilities

  • Parking

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Potential members of the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art co-op must be a legal resident of the state of Minnesota and a mid-career artist. After reviewing slides and an application form submitted by applicants, the Membership Committee will invite applicants who meet the membership requirements to an interview when a studio in the building becomes available. The Membership Committee selects the best candidate based on criteria such as the development of his/her artwork, exhibition experience, grants received, co-op experience, type of media, and the willingness and ability to participate actively in the co-op.

While Artspace is the general manager of the building, the artists protect their investment in the building through an elected board and several committees. Each co-op member is expected to serve on the board for at least one term (of three years) over an eight-year period. In addition, each co-op member is expected to participate in at least two committees. On average each member spends six hours each month working for the co-op.

PURCHASE INFORMATION

To join the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art co-op, an artist purchases a Class A share for $5,000. This share conveys all membership rights to the purchaser only. A share may be purchased jointly; however, a jointly owned share represents only one vote. A share in the Traffic Zone constitutes owning the lease on the studio and not the physical space, which is owned by the co-op.

Shares are non-transferable. The sale of a share is regulated by the Shareholder Agreement. The $5,000 for the share is reimbursed in its entirety when a member leaves the project.
