Playfulness, experimentation and judgment are the principles behind my art. I begin all work whimsically not knowing exactly how it will look in the end. I experiment to make the visual relationships taut and constantly judge if formal artistic elements are resolving themselves into lasting relationships. It is difficult to make abstract art, because, as
I see it, there are no – nor should there be – rules for how to proceed. I love to see something
I have completed but it is the process in reconciling the relationships between line, mass, color, value and subject that most intrigue me.
My imagery is drawn from remembered experiences. I complete work in my studio relying on memories of places and events. My work in 2009 and 2010 has focused on male and female relationships.
I have been making art full time since 1990 and am currently represented by Circa Gallery in Minneapolis and Grand Hand Gallery in St. Paul, Minnesota. I have work in many corporate, university and museum collections, and have been
a visiting artist at various colleges and universities.
I have taught art for the past 30 years at colleges, universities, art centers and in my studio. Currently
I am teaching Abstract Landscape, Abstract Figure, Collage and Monotype in my studio.
